Carien is a comprehensively trained DBT-Therapist, psychologist and chairperson of the ADBTA.  

 After graduating at the top of her class at UFS Carien has received extensive further training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). She completed her comprehensive DBT training through Behavioral Tech (USA) , studying under international experts such as Anthony DuBose from the USA and Fragiskos Gonidakis from Greece.

Carien headed the adolescent unit of the South African DBT Institute. She then proceeded to join and head the ADBTA. Furthermore, she is registered as a trainer in training with BTech. 

Carien is currently involved in providing DBT group therapy in South Africa, individual DBT therapy and also training fellow practitioners.

Carien lives in Johannesburg with her husband and three children. In her leisure time, she enjoys birding, sunsets in the Bush and visiting her roots in the Eastern Free State.

Dr Ella Brent

Counselling Psychologist.

The Day Clinic

Dr Ella Brent trained in the UK, and qualified with a Doctorate in Clinical
Psychology from University College London in 1999. Between 2000 and 2002 she
worked in Public Health in the UK in Child and Family Services. From 2002
until 2008 Ella worked at Tara Psychiatric Hospital, across a variety of
inpatient and outpatient services, and culminating in heading the Tara
Hospital Psychology Department. Since leaving Tara Hospital, Ella has run a
private practice offering individual adult psychotherapy and
clinical supervision. 

In 2015 Ella joined with colleagues in creating and establishing
The Day Clinic, in Saxonworld Johannesburg. It is a revolutionary intensive
Day Hospital Service, providing a multidisciplinary stabilisation programme
informed by the DBT approach to Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, Distress
Tolerance and Interpersonal Effectiveness. Ella is both a Clinician and Co-Director of the Service, and provides CPD accredited training to teams and individuals.

Roxanne Zwart is a Counselling Psychologist in Pretoria, South Africa, registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and the Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF). She has been involved in the mental health field in South Africa since 2012 and has been in private practice as a registered psychologist for over five years.

Roxanne holds a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of Pretoria, as well as a BA Honours in Psychological Counselling and a BA in Health Sciences and Social Services from the University of South Africa, and a certificate in Human Resource Management from the University of Cape Town. Her clinical work is integrative, and she includes evidence-based approaches such as Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). 

Her official DBT journey began in 2024 where she joined and went on to form part of the core team of psychologists who present DBT Skills training in Pretoria and Centurion (Pretoria DBT Groups), she has also joined DBT consultation groups and she joined the South African Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Association when it was established in 2025.

Casey is a Counselling Psychologist based in Johannesburg, offering sessions in Bryanston, Rosebank, and online. She is passionate about helping adolescents, adults, and families create more meaningful and fulfilling lives. Dr Close earned her medical degree, MBBCh and completed her psychiatric training at the University of the Witwatersrand. She is a Fellow of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa in Psychiatry. In addition, Dr Close has undergone specialized training in mediation skills to better assist her clients and patients.

Dr Close is a certified Dialectical Behavioural Therapy DBT practitioner through Behavioral Tech, a Linehan Institute Training Company, and applies these principles in her therapeutic work. Dr Close also handles forensic psychiatric cases and has a solid legal background, holding certification as a Certified Independent Medical Examiner. She has  obtained a LLB (Cum Laude) from the University of South Africa. 

With extensive experience as a psychiatric consultant, Dr Close manages and treats a range of mental health conditions, in both adolescents and adults. Psychiatric expertise and information are provided through various media engagements and professional presentations.
